Reading through James: Who are the poor?

"Give me your eyes so I can see." -Brandon Heath

Comment below on how this can be lived out in your daily life.

Watch the prayercast by Operation World on the country of  Côte d'Ivoire

If you can't see the video go here.

Pray for the people of  Côte d'Ivoire   and your prayer partner.

Prepare:  Continue to watch for different cultural patterns or the "instinctual way" that people go about their daily life, how you go about your daily life.  What is normal?

Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? (James 2:5 ESV)

  1. In verse five it talks about how God uses the poor to be rich in His kingdom. The poor are rich and close to God because they don't have all of the extra "stuff" to take their attention from God, onto Earthly things. Today in youth group, we watched another video from the Basic Series by Francis Chan. This video was on prayer and he was Francis was dissecting the Lord's Prayer. What he said about the phrase, "...give us this day our daily bread...", really stuck with me. He revealed the fact that if God gave us our daily bread, many of us would be unsatisfied. It would be just enough to sustain us through the day, not the next few days or weeks. This daily provision makes us trust in God. Relying on him to provide for the next day and days to come.

God has provided abundantly for my family and I. I have become content, not having to rely on God due to his blessings; which leave me safe and happy. Trust is something I am asking God to help me with.

  2. The promise that the spiritually rich will inherit His promised kingdom reminds me of the 1st part of Ephesians. In it, we read about the spiritual wealth that God has provided for us. The 2nd part is about our response (our spiritual walk) to his blessings. Is our walk the same wherever we go? Do we represent Christ well, because of our love for Him and the people he places in our lives? Do we witness faithfully for His honor and glory? Challenging, isn't it?!
    In Him,
    Christy :-)
