Reading through James: Words, fire or water?

Why is it that bad news, gossip, and libel; words that destroy; can spread throughout a community like a wildfire, but the good, the lovely, the long-suffering, the grace, the forbearing and forgiving words; these are hard to find?  This should not be so.  While the first group of words can set a community on fire and destroy it, the later group can be like cool waters that will put out the fire and take away the heat, and even bring healing.  Oh, may we be a community whose words refresh.

Read James 3:5-8.

Comment on how this impacts your day today.

Watch the prayercast from Operation World on the country of England.

If you can't see the video go here.

Pray for the people of England and your prayer partner.

Prepare:  Have you written your note yet?  Be sure to get it to Beth by Wednesday.  Don't know what note?  Well, write a note to a teammate (but you don't know who will get it)  start with saying Dear Teammate......then write a note of encouragement.  On the outside of the envelope write to: teammate, from: (then put your name here so Beth won't give you your note back to you as part of the Barnabas Project).  More questions?  see Beth :)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruits.

  1. Oh how convicting!!! My prayer tonight (after reading these verses in James) was asking the Lord to help me (& my family members) to keep our mouths shut when we have unpleasing thoughts. Help us to pray before we speak, so that our words can be in tune with the Lord's will and not our own. Help us to speak the truth in love-checking our motives ahead of time. Finally, help us to not have apathetic, hardened hearts (as the prayer at the end of the England Prayercast mentioned).
    In Christ,
    Christy
